Quick Tip: Gradebook Filters
Canvas Gradebook Filters allow instructors to manage, organize, and analyze student performance data by drilling down to show only the information you need at any given time. Let’s take a look at some of the filtering options available in the Canvas Gradebook.
Filter Options
Immediately below the Search fields that we explored last week, there is an Apply Filters button. After clicking on this button, a menu of filter options will appear.

From this menu, you can select to view only grade columns by
- Module
- Section - when applicable in cross-listed courses
- Assignment Group
- Student Group - when applicable
- Status - late, missing, excused, etc.
- Submission - has ungraded submission, has unposted grades, etc.
- Start and End Date
More than one filter can be applied at any time. Instructors might want to view all submissions from one particular Student Group who might have Ungraded Submissions. This would save instructors time locating specific cells in the Gradebook and streamline the grading flow.
Or instructors might want to view all late and missing (Status) assignments during the first few Modules in an effort to identify struggling students and help provide timely interventions and earlier support.

When filters have been applied, instructors can adjust them by clicking on the filter bubble itself to present a drop-down menu. Here they can add additional filters within that selection, remove the current selection, or remove the filter entirely.

Create and Manage Filter Presets
Instructors who find themselves applying the same filters regularly can also create and save a filter preset to apply again in the future.
From the Apply Filters drop-down menu, click on Create & Manage Filter Presets.
The Saved Filter Presets tray will expand. Click on the Create Filter Preset arrow.
A drop-down menu will appear. Here you can enter a preset name and select the desired filters for your saved preset. When you have entered in your filter selections, click the Save Filter Preset button.
This saved filter is now included in the Apply Filters drop-down menu for easy application.
Instructors can easily edit and delete Saved Filter Presets anytime by clicking on the Create & Manage Filter Presets link.
Hopefully, the filtering tools in the Gradebook will save you time and provide helpful insight into student activity and engagement. Watch for another gradebook-related Quick Tip next week when we’ll talk about why setting a default grade might come in handy and the steps to do it.
